   Yolande of Dreux (1263 – 2 August 1330) was a remarkable noblewoman who held prominent titles in both Scotland and Brittany during her lifetime. Her marriages to Alexander III of Scotland and Arthur II, Duke of Brittany, positioned her at the heart of medieval European politics. Early Life Born in 1263, Yolande was the daughter of Robert IV, Count of Dreux, and Beatrice, Countess of Montfort, making her a member of the Capetian dynasty’s cadet branch. This heritage granted her significant influence and political connections, which would shape her future. Queen of Scotland In 1285, Yolande married Alexander III of Scotland, a union designed to strengthen ties between Scotland and France and assert Scottish independence from England. Tragically, Alexander died in 1286, shortly after their marriage, leaving Yolande widowed. She claimed to be pregnant with Alexander’s child, a potential heir to the Scottish throne. However, the pregnancy resulted in a stillbirth or miscarriage, leaving Scotland in a succession crisis that eventually led to the rise of Margaret, Maid of Norway, as heir. Yolande remained in Scotland for several years, managing her dower estates and playing a diplomatic role. She returned to France by the late 1280s, where her life took a new direction. Duchess of Brittany and Countess of Montfort In 1294, Yolande married Arthur II, Duke of Brittany, becoming Duchess of Brittany. The marriage produced at least six children, including John of Montfort, who would later play a key role in the Breton War of Succession. Yolande inherited the County of Montfort in 1311 upon her mother’s death and ruled it as a sovereign countess until 1322. Even in her later years, Yolande maintained her influence in Scotland, sending envoys to manage her estates there. She passed away on 2 August 1330, leaving a legacy as a bridge between the French and Scottish courts.
