Reginald de Dunstanville

Namesake

Reginald de Dunstanville (c. 1110–1175) was an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England and Lady Sybilla Corbet. He became the 1st Earl of Cornwall and was a significant figure in the 12th-century history of England during the Anarchy—a civil war between King Stephen and Empress Matilda for the English throne.

Biography

• Birth and Parentage: Reginald was born around 1110 as one of King Henry I’s numerous illegitimate children. His mother, Sybilla Corbet, was of a noble family connected to the Corbets of Shropshire.

• Rise to Power: Despite his illegitimacy, Reginald held a prestigious position due to his royal lineage. In 1141, during the Anarchy, Empress Matilda, his half-sister, created him Earl of Cornwall as a reward for his support in her conflict with King Stephen.

• Role in the Anarchy: Reginald was a staunch supporter of Empress Matilda. He played a vital role in securing her escape from the siege at Oxford Castle in 1142 and in maintaining her claim to the throne.

• Governance: As Earl of Cornwall, Reginald was tasked with managing the southwestern regions of England, an area of strategic importance during the conflict. He established a stronghold in Cornwall, consolidating his influence over the region.

• Marriage and Family: Reginald married Beatrice FitzRichard, the daughter and heiress of William FitzRichard, a Cornish nobleman. Through her, he strengthened his ties to the Cornish aristocracy and acquired significant lands.
